Thoughts on Democratic Gubernatorial Debate

Feb 09, 2010 -- 3:53pm

Feb 8 was the first and hopefully only debate between Bill White and Farouk Shami (hereon referred to as Shamwow) for the Democratic Primary race for Governor of Texas. Early on in the Primary Sammy Allred's expressed his opinion of Shamwow's chances to win the race by quoting a friend of his in saying "He would have a better chance of winning if he spent money on changing his name."

After listening to the debate, I (Producer Robert) think Shamwow needs to keep his mouth shut or learn the language of English before trying to run for public office! I listened to the debate on the radio (right here on 98.9 FM "The BIG Talker", oh, sorry, it's a habit) and I've never heard him speak before the debate. As soon as he answered the first question I literally burst out laughing! That was the funniest thing I've heard in a long long time. I no sooner gained my composure when the process started all over again. Question, Answer, Laughter, Question, Answer, Laughter. I thought I was listening to the radio version of Mystery Science Theater 3000 and was just waiting for the "voice over" to make fun of what he was saying! How can this guy be serious about running for Governor of any State in the Union when no one can understand what he says? I thought it was some sort of parody of Apu who runs the Kwik-E Mart on the Simpsons, but instead of "You want to buy a Slurpee" it was "You want to vote for Shami" (reread that using a funky accent & you'll laugh I promise). At one point a co-worker came in the room while I was laughing and asked what was so funny. I told him to listen...he only lasted about 4 words before laughing out loud! This is a joke right?!

The results of the debate? White wins and Shamwow must be a comedy muse. You couldn't understand what he said and therefore you couldn't pay attention to anything that Bill White had to say! But seriously, he has a better chance of replacing Osama bin Laden than Governor Perry and it's not because I'm racist or have some sort of prejudice against those with funny accents, nope, it's because he's in Texas and like most Texans we like straight shooters and don't like interpreters because we think we might be getting tricked.

I'm all for succesful people in the private sector helping the Government but part of getting elected is building trust and part of building trust is being able to effectively communicate. Here's to hearing what Bill White really has to say when he goes up against the winner of the Republican Primary.
